• Curricular Study
Language acquisition and cultural appreciation are the two fundamental components of language programs. Students choose to study either French or Spanish. After grade 5, students are strongly advised against changing their language option. Host Country Studies involve the acquisition of skills in the Turkish Language and general knowledge about Turkey.
We in the Foreign Language Division strive to bring forth the necessary conditions so that these young learners cultivate an awaken appetite to develop their skills, not only as apprentices of a foreign tongue, but as whole individuals whose main goal is to strengthen their sense of responsibility within a scholar environment, a World of Discovery by itself. It is amid our purposes that pupils become accurate and fluent speakers through consistency, finesse, and merriment, essential constituents of the making of a self-confident and cooperative student. • Co-curricular Study
Beginners level language acquisition activity program is offered during scheduled activity periods. • Extra-curricular study
To promote non curricular languages, school may offer language classes after school. In this study the program is sponsored by the parents or the consulates.
Music
Music is a basic form of human expression.
As a universal language, it enriches
the understanding of all cultures. MY
arts provide opportunities for students
to communicate both individually and
collectively. MEF music students have
solo and ensemble performance opportunities.
We develop musical talents, skills,
and knowledge by singing and musical
appreciation studies. Through a variety
of performances and learning opportunities
we encourage student team work, growth
in self-esteem, respect for all cultures
and a recognition of the importance
of music.
Instrumentals had the opportunity to
perform on their own instruments at
all concerts. All eighth grade music
students have the opportunity to play
the keyboard during class time. The
6-8th graders performed at the Holiday
Travelogue Concert in December, The
MEF IS Talent Show in March and performed
the musical, "Compose Yourself"
in May.
ART EDUCATION The goal of the Visual Arts Department
is the preparation of ‘critical citizens’
who value visual culture, cultural difference,
democracy and social justice through a philosophy
that emphasises context and community, knowledge
and experience, critical thought and reflection,
and practice and evaluation.
The
Department Art Program is as follows:
• In the Primary Years students are
able to explore in an artistic visual
and practical way topics or themes that
they study in other subjects. Art is
an integrated part of their education.
• From Grade 6 to 8 students the visual
arts program encompasses techniques
such as drawing, painting, sculpture
and printmaking. Students are also encouraged
to use a combination of techniques and
work to develop a knowledge and understanding
of a range of observational, creative
and interpretative works. At the end
of the academic year students present
an exhibition of their finished works
along with their port-folios.
• From Grade 9 to 12 art students work
towards the International General Certificate
of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Art and
Design Examinations. The paper options
for examinations are: Observational
Study; Interpretative Study; Design
Study; Coursework and students enter
for any two of these options.
• The IB Diploma Visual Arts Program
is also offered to students in their
final school years. It is a two-year
course taken at either a Higher Level
or Standard Level and art students are
required to prepare for a solo art exhibition
and presentation of all portfolios and
research workbooks at the end of the
course.
Pastoral Care
Pastoral Care is a relatively new course offered
to International School students in Grades
9 through 12. The intention of the course
is to give students a forum to discuss the
issues that immediately concern them, while
providing a curriculum structured to address
the experiences normally encountered during
adolescence. Through group work and discussion
students are encouraged to share their thoughts
and experiences, while written assignments
are intended to promote reflection and critical
thought.
The Pastoral Care curriculum is planned and
structured in advance incorporating a series
of topics concerning Personal and Social Education
and Development, and it is flexible enough
to address issues that may unexpectedly arise
within the school and community as the year
progresses. Students in the Pastoral Care
class are encouraged to express what they
want to discuss so that their time is used
as effectively as possible. http://mefpastoralcare.bravehost.com
Physical Education
The PE department contains two members of
staff who are responsible for delivering PE
from Pre-School through to IGCSE. The curriculum
is in line with IBO guidelines and looks to
teach pupils the basic motor skills at a young
age and then develop these skills into games
as they progress through the school. The pupils
are taught in a number of major sports that
include; basketball, football, volleyball,
swimming and athletics. On top of this the
pupils will also be looking at their overall
fitness levels in attempt to keep themselves
healthy.
The school competes against other International
Schools in the major sports and has had some
success, especially in basketball. Recently
the school has also introduced house competitions
which has involved more of the school in a
competitive sporting environment.
Design Technology
This course is essentially concerned with
solving problems in an effort to stimulate
students’ ingenuity and to encourage them
to combine intellectual talents and practical
skills. In MYP students are granted flexibility
in the choice of technology subjects, but
each course provides a balance between three
key areas: systems, information and materials.
This subject area is valuable for reinforcing
and integrating skills learned in other disciplines,
especially in the presentation and handling
of data and the processes involved in the
design and manufacture of a product. At the
same time, it fosters awareness of the social
and ethical implications of technological
development. Currently grade 6 is offered
DT and grade 7 and 8 is offered IT. Grade
6 have worked with wood, paper and card to
find practical solutions to design problems,
at the same time getting familiar with the
various tools that a designer has to use to
present his ideas. In particular, students
are encouraged to display ingenuity and creativity
in devising practical solutions to given tasks.
Students use the design cycle to: investigate,
design, plan, create and evaluate.
Library
MEFIS library is a favourite place amongst
our students. It is an ever evolving place,
aiming to meet the needs of our student population
and work in accordance with the IBO curriculum.
Students are able to sign out books ranging
from fiction, non-fiction, picture, multi-lingual,
foreign languages, etc.
The librarian works closely with class teachers
to develop a program of study that compliments
and supports units of inquiry and other curriculum.
The activities are meaningful and enjoyable
to ensure students continue to enjoy visiting
the library. Inquiry and research skills are
supported through activities, computers/internet,
reference material etc.
Special events are planned throughout the
year promoting the library and literacy including:
book fairs, book orders, author visits, etc.
Please stop in to visit, you are always welcome!
